Exploring the Cost of Dementia Care in the UK

Cost of Dementia Care

The cost of dementia care in the UK is a significant concern, with Alzheimer’s Research UK estimating that 944,000 individuals are currently living with this condition. Dementia, characterized by its impact on memory, cognition, and behavior, poses significant challenges for caregivers, who often grapple with the financial burden associated with providing care.

Understanding Funding for Dementia Care

Residential & Home Care:

The cost of dementia care in residential care homes or home settings is typically covered either privately or by the Local Authority. Individuals with assets surpassing £23,250 are expected to self-fund their care. Conversely, those with assets below this threshold may qualify for partial or full funding from the Local Authority. For individuals with assets falling below £14,250, full funding from the Local Authority is usually provided following an assessment of their needs and the determination of a Personal Budget.

Nursing & Home Care:

Individuals with dementia requiring nursing care may be eligible for Funded Nursing Care (FNC), a flat-rate payment directly provided to the nursing home by the National Health Service (NHS). FNC rates, effective from April 1, 2023, range from £219.71 to £302.25 per week, depending on eligibility criteria assessed by the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). If FNC does not cover the entire cost of nursing care in a residential setting, individuals may need to fund the remainder privately or through the Local Authority, subject to their asset level.

Essentially. If someone is already receiving care due to a disability or other significant health needs, they may be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) if their needs are determined to be very high and complex. This means that the NHS will cover the full cost of their care, including nursing care, whether they receive it at home or in a care home. So, if someone is already receiving care due to being disabled and their needs meet the criteria for NHS CHC, they could have their care covered under this program.

Protect Your Estate: Safeguarding Assets Against Care Fees

If you or your partner have received a diagnosis of dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or any illness necessitating payment for care, safeguarding your share of the estate from care expenses becomes crucial. In marriage or partnerships, individuals do not each possess 50% ownership of the estate; rather, they each own the entire estate, constituting 100%. Consequently, the entire estate is subject to care assessments. To mitigate potential financial losses towards care fees, it is imperative to legally divide the estate into two halves, ensuring a maximum exposure of 50% towards care costs. This legal procedure is cost-effective, typically less than a month’s stay in a care facility, yet could potentially save tens of thousands of pounds.
