Calls for the Government to Stop Hiding Facts That Are Costing People Their Homes

For decades, British families have been told that owning a home is the key to security — a foundation for their children’s future. The Right to Buy scheme encouraged millions of working-class families to purchase their council homes, saving the government billions in public housing costs and bringing in over £50 billion in revenue from property sales since the 1980s.

It was promoted as one of the greatest social achievements of modern Britain — turning tenants into homeowners, reducing the council housing bill, and giving people the chance to build something for the next generation.

But what most people were never told is that these same homes can now be taken back to cover the cost of later life care.

Under the current system, anyone with assets over £23,250 — including the value of their home — is expected to pay for their own care. Meanwhile, those who never bought their homes or who rent receive their care for free. In other words, the very people who followed the government’s encouragement to buy are now the ones most at risk of losing everything in old age.

Many campaigners and estate planners argue this is a double injustice:

  • The government saved billions by selling off public housing stock.

  • Now, in later life, it reclaims those same homes through the care system.

This issue has remained largely hidden from the public. The government continues to reassure people that the NHS will care for them “from cradle to grave” — but what most don’t realise is that this promise does not include social care.

That means illnesses such as dementia and Parkinson’s — which affect around 1 in 3 people over the age of 60 — are not covered by the NHS, even though they are among the most common causes of long-term care needs in the UK.

People only discover this once they or a loved one are diagnosed — often when it’s too late to protect their home or take out any form of insurance.

Our organisation has joined forces with estate planners across the UK who believe this information should be made freely available to everyone — not just the wealthy or well-connected who can afford £300-an-hour legal advice.

Homeowners deserve to know the truth about how care funding works and what steps can be taken to protect the home they’ve worked for.

That’s why a growing number of professionals are calling on the government to stop hiding these facts and ensure every UK homeowner has access to free, unbiased information about estate protection.

Free Advice Centre for UK Homeowners

To make this possible, a free advice centre has been set up for UK homeowners to come and ask questions, get the facts, and find out whether it’s possible to shield their properties from future care fees — and exactly how to do it.

These centres are currently based in the Midlands, chosen as a central location for accessibility. However, for anyone living more than an hour from Birmingham City, the same information is available free of charge online via a simple video call.

The benefit of these free video consultations is that families can take part from anywhere in the world, ensuring loved ones can be included in the conversation. These sessions have been running successfully since 2024, yet many homeowners are still unaware that such free advice even exists — or how vital it can be to act before it’s too late.

Soon, it can no longer be said that the government is hiding this information — because it is now available to anyone willing to set aside just an hour of their time. This knowledge is no longer reserved for the wealthy. It’s been offered free for over a year, and anyone who chooses not to seek advice while it’s available cannot later claim they were unaware of the protection they could have put in place.

We can’t stress enough how simple — and how important — it is to do this: just fill out your details using the link below, and someone will call you to check what protection options are available based on your health, age, and estate value; if you qualify, a quick video call will be arranged so you can get the exact information you need to make sure your home is not included in future financial means tests.
